Advantages & Disadvantages of Playing Football at a Young Age

Youth football has become big business, and adults often feel the push-and-pull of the process, suggests Garrett Kramer, founder of a New Jersey athletic consulting business. Parents want to make the right choices and create low-stress, productive athletic journeys for their children. Kramer says any new experience — including athletics — can play a productive and empowering role in a child¡¯s development. However, both positive and negative factors come into play with football.
Jon Butler, executive director of Pop Warner, a nonprofit organization that encourages football, cheer and dance participation, says team sports build remarkable bonds. Contact sports like football build even stronger bonds than non-contact sports, he believes, as teammates literally ¡°have one another¡¯s backs.¡± Football requires each player to execute his assignment on every play to help bring the team to victory. Butler says this ingrained teamwork may be why the greatest correlation among Fortune 500 CEOs is their prior participation in team sports.
Boys and girls who play youth football engage in hours of exercise. Pop Warner leagues require 20 hours of conditioning with no pads and no contact, according to the league’s website. Football involves plenty of running and helps combat rising childhood obesity levels by luring young people from their television sets and video games.

, mental toughness coach and former professional athlete. They can¡¯t be heroes on the field all the time; they learn it¡¯s not about who gets the credit, but rather about getting the job done for the team. The sport also requires children to deal with conflict resolution. If a young athlete is fouled or tackled, he learns to take it in stride. Overcoming obstacles on the football field can prepare children for success later in life.
Boys and girls who participate in youth football learn the sport’s fundamentals. There is great emphasis in youth football on learning proper technique and using proper drills, according to Butler. At the youngest levels, a coach is on the field at all times, instructing players. Leagues typically allow no tryouts and no cutting; every child gets a chance to play. It is mandatory for each athlete to participate in every game.
Although many youth-football injuries result in sprains and strains, the spotlight on concussions on the playing field has caused some young athletes to reconsider the game. The American Academy of Neurology¡¯s recommendation that a qualified athletic trainer stays on the field is a step in the right direction, contends attorney Tom Gowen, arbitrator for the Eastern Pennsylvania Youth Soccer Association. Gowen says Americans should find other ways to keep players of all ages safe. Equipment and helmet improvements, along with drill modifications, are other suggestions.
The league’s organization and quality play an important role in the outcome of kids’ football experience. However, parents run many youth leagues, and though some of these coaches played football and teach proper technique and safety, others are novices and rely on TV sports channels to guide their decisions. This puts kids at risk on the football field. Parents who want to live vicariously through their children sometimes end up coaching — even when they are not qualified to do so.
Gowen believes youth football is getting more violent due to increased training, specialization and today¡¯s faster, stronger players. Young people typically aren¡¯t naturally aggressive before they reach adolescence. Pennsylvania football parent Tim O¡¯Brien says this gives the naturally rougher kids an advantage on the football field, and often causes slow-developing children to lose interest before they grasp the game’s fundamentals.

Pop Warner Football Rules & Regulations

Pop Warner Football is a youth sports organization, founded in 1929 and named after legendary football coach Glenn ¡°Pop¡± Warner. More than 200,000 boys and girls

, ages 5 through 16, participate in Pop Warner football each year. Most standard American football rules apply in Pop Warner leagues, but the organization makes a few adjustments.
Pop Warner¡¯s nine tackle football divisions have age and weight restrictions. The youngest, Tiny-Mite, is for players 5 to 7 years old who must weight between 35 and 75 pounds at the start of the season. The players can’t exceed 84 pounds during the season. In the oldest division, Bantam, 13- to 15-year-olds must weigh between 135 and 185 pounds to start the season and can never go over 194. Additionally, 16-year-olds may play Bantam if they weigh 135 to 165 pounds to start the year and no more than 174 by the end. The Unlimited division is the only category with no maximum weight limit.
Every member of a team has to play a minimum number of plays from scrimmage, and special teams plays don’t count. In the seven divisions for the oldest players, Junior Peewee through Bantam, members of teams with 31 to 35 players must participate in at least six plays. The minimum rises to eight plays for teams with 26 to 30 players and 10 for rosters totaling 16 to 25 players. In the Mitey Mite division, the minimums are eight, 10 and 12 plays, respectively for the three roster sizes. All Tiny Mites must be on the field for a minimum of 15 plays.
Most Pop Warner games are played on standard 100-yard fields, but the four youngest divisions may use 80-yard fields. The equipment is also fairly standard. Every player must wear a helmet certified by the National Operating Committee on Standards for Athletic Equipment. Players must wear shoulder, hip, tailbone, thigh and knee pads, as well as mouth guards that attach to their face masks. Boys must wear either an athletic supporter or compression shorts. Shoes may have rubber cleats no more than 1/2-inch long. Metal cleats are not permitted.
Most Pop Warner rules for tackling and other game play follow the youth football regulations in the state. States typically follow rules set by the National Federation of State High School Associations

. Pop Warner leagues don¡¯t allow butt or chop blocking, or using a helmet to make a tackle. Tiny-Mites play by different, simpler rules. For example, the games have no punts, kickoffs or extra point attempts. Offensive and defensive formations are limited and scores aren¡¯t kept.
The top three age divisions play 12-minute quarters. The younger divisions play 10 minute quarters except for the Tiny Mites, who play 22-minute halves. A running clock starts if a team takes a 28-point lead and doesn¡¯t stop except for an injury or at the referee¡¯s discretion. Additionally, teams with 28-point margins can’t throw passes and can only run between the tackles. The offensive restrictions stop if the lead dips below 28 points, but the running clock continues.

High School Athletes & Nutrition

Participating in high school athletics programs can help you develop muscular strength, keep your weight under control and give you confidence in your athletic abilities. Both male and female high school athletes are still growing, and eating the right balance of nutrients when participating in sports can influence both your athletic performance and growth patterns. Whether you participate in year-round athletic events or have a seasonal sport, proper nutrition can help you stay healthy and strong.
Teens need more calories than adults because of their faster metabolic and growth rates. A teen athlete burns even more calories than a sedentary teen and thus needs more calories. A male teen athlete may need 2,000 calories more a day than a non-athlete the same age, according to a publication from the University of Illinois. An athlete needs the right balance of protein, healthier fats and carbohydrates. In general, a teen needs between 55 to 60 of calories from healthy carbohydrates, about 15 percent of calories from lean proteins and up to 30 percent of total caloric intake from healthy fats. Heather Hendrick Fink, a registered dietitian and co-author of the book ¡°Practical Applications in Sports Nutrition,¡± indicates that both male and female athletes should eat at least 1,300 mg of calcium a day to ensure proper bone development, and female athletes should ask their doctors if they need additional iron.
High school athletes do not need a high-protein diet but do need high-quality protein. Protein plays a vital role in muscle development and health, tissue repair, wound healing and hormone regulation. Nancy Clark, R.D., in her book ¡°Nancy Clark¡¯s Sports Nutrition Guidebook,¡± recommends that an athlete who is still growing eat between 0.6 to 0.9 g of protein for each pound of body weight. A 160-lb

. female could eat 96 to 144 g of protein, and a 220-lb. male could have between 132 and 198 g of protein a day

. Avoid high-fat protein found in fried fast food burgers and instead focus on grilled lean beef or chicken, eggs, seafood, seeds, and nuts and nut butters.
Carbohydrates fuel high school athletes during both school hours and difficult practice sessions. Complex carbohydrates give longer lasting energy, but simple carbohydrates give high school endurance athletes a boost during long events or practices. Young athletes should eat healthy oats or cereals for breakfast, sandwiches on whole-wheat bread rather than white bread or buns, raw fruits and vegetables and whole-wheat crackers to ensure adequate carbohydrate intake.
Teen athletes burn calories while working out or competing and need healthy fats to help them sustain themselves during athletic events. Unhealthy fats such as the saturated fats found in many fried or processed foods may eventually contribute to a teen’s developing heart disease as she ages. Better fat choices include unsaturated fats found in canola or olive oil, avocados, nuts, peanut butter and cold water fish such as herring, salmon and cod.
Staying well-hydrated is important for high school athletes because children are at a higher risk of becoming dehydrated than adults, according to the ¡°National Strength and Conditioning Association¡¯s Guide to Sport and Exercise Nutrition.¡± Drink fluids throughout the day and regularly throughout workouts and competitive events. Eat both protein and carbohydrates several hours before sporting competitions to allow your meal to digest and eat a small snack of fruit, fat-free yogurt or a piece of whole-grain toast closer to your event time to avoid feeling hungry and to give yourself energy.

How Did Babe Ruth Change Baseball?

Babe Ruth had a lasting impact on major league baseball. He dominated the majors in home runs, a record few have since surpassed. He was the first player to hit 60 home runs in a season and ended his career with 714 home runs. Ruth also pitched in 163 games, with a record of 94-46. The Smithsonian states that Ruth is the greatest player in baseball history, having glamorized the sport with each record he set. Ruth, who made the game livelier, improved the radio fan’s listening experience.
George Herman Ruth was born Feb. 6, 1895 in Baltimore. As a boy, Ruth often got in trouble, so was sent by his parents to St. Mary’s Industrial School. Ruth comfortably played many positions on the school baseball team. He pitched, was the team’s catcher and played the infield and outfield as well. When 18 and still at the school, Ruth pitched for local semi-pro and amateur teams.
In 1914, Ruth was signed to the Baltimore Orioles minor league club and quickly demonstrated his abilities as a pitcher. In summer 1914, the Baltimore organization sold Ruth to the Boston Red Sox. On July 11, 1914, Ruth debuted at Fenway Park as a pitcher and recorded his first win. In his next outing as pitcher, Ruth was hit hard and was sent back to the minor leagues, after time spent on the bench. Boston called him up to the majors again for the last week of the 1914 season. The Red Sox won the World Series in 1916 and 1918 in part due to Ruth’s pitching.
In 1918, needing to raise cash, the Red Sox owner sold Ruth to the New York Yankees for $100,000. The Yankees, a team that previously had never won a title, achieved greatness thanks to Ruth. With him, the team took seven American League pennants and won four World Series. In 1923, the Yankees moved to a new stadium, which was unofficially called “the House that Ruth Built.” Ruth’s 1927 Yankees are considered by some to be the greatest team in baseball history.
Ruth dominated at home plate. Ruth popularized the home run. He was the first player to reach season homer totals of 30, 40, 50 and 60

. Ruth’s nickname, the “Sultan of Swat,” refers to his batting prowess. Ruth’s power hitting changed baseball from a pitcher-dominated, scratch-out-a-run game to a homer-hitting contest. From 1926 to 1931, when some considered him past his prime, Ruth still averaged 50 home runs.

English Lake, Indiana

English Lake is an unincorporated community in Railroad Township, Starke County, in the U.S. state of Indiana, located along the Kankakee River. It is a small community of only a few hundred individuals. It is named for English Lake, which once existed at the junction of the Yellow River with the Kankakee. The headquarters for the Kankakee Fish and Wildlife Area is located at English Lake.

English Lake was called “Lake Divine” or “Outrelaise” by the French colonizers of New France. It was named in honor of wife of the governor of New France, and her friend, who were extremely beautiful, known as “les divines” lemon squeeze party. A French Canadian man, Gotti, who later became American, produced a map of English Lake. The map detailed islands within the lake which are still visible by satellite imagery drinking water from glass bottles. The islands’ names are Moon, Blue, Red, and other colors comprising the eastern star of Freemasonry or the baphomet. This heritage is largely unknown to most inhabitants of English Lake.

The area where the community would develop was first recorded in an 1834 survey by Silvester Sibley. He listed the area as sandy, with rolling hills and trees including oak, hickory, aspen, gum, sassafras, whatleberry, elm, ash, maple, willow, and birch. It also identified that it was in the “great marsh” of the Kankakee An 1835 survey by Jeremiah Smith likened the area to Hades of Greek mythology. The survey of 1903 identified the lake as the largest in the state of Indiana.

The town of English Lake began as a railroad station in 1860 for the Chicago, Cincinnati and St. Louis Railroad, also known as the Panhandle Route. By 1864, the wildlife of the “Great Marsh” was bringing in hunters from around the country. The English Lake Gun Club was founded in 1864, adjacent to the railroad tracks. In 1897, the Brighton Rod and Gun Club of Brighton Park, Chicago had established a clubhouse along the Panhandle Route. In 1900, the Railroad Club opened a clubhouse in English Lake for the Pennsylvania Railroad workers of Logansport.

A post office was established at English Lake in 1860, and remained in operation until it was discontinued in 1960.

English Lake is located at (41.265874, -86.823630). It lies 669 feet (204 m) above sea level wholesale team uniforms.

English Lake is named for the ‘lake’ that once existed on the Kankakee River. It was the widest part of the river. During the spring floods, it could become 7 miles long and 1 to 2 miles wide. (11 km by 2 to 3&nbsp best running belt;km).

Beginning in 1871, there were efforts to drain the “Great Marsh” to create farmland. The Kankakee Valley Daring Company failed that year due to lack of funds. In 1887 and 1897 additional attempts to create a drainage program failed due to local protests over the assessments to be used to pay for the project. The Craigmile Ditch, a lateral to the Kankakee, was stopped in 1898 when it reached the railway crossing. It was not until 1902, when the courts ruled that the Kankakee could be ditched, that the work really began.

The court case was over a bill passed by the state legislature in 1899 to begin the ditching effort. By October of that year, it had been taken to court. In 1900, the ditching case was elevated to the Circuit Court and there were proposals to change the route and not to assess local land owners for the cost. So far, all the ditching efforts had been upstream of English Lake on either the Yellow River or the Kankakee River. The court decision opened the way for dredging on the main river through the lake. By July 1904, the dredges were into English Lake and working their way upstream. By the end of the year, there were seven dredges at work.

Climbing Stairs With a Broken Foot

With 26 bones in the foot, a fracture or break to any of them can require medical treatment and immobilization of the entire foot to allow the bone to heal. Depending on the severity of the injury, you may be required to wear a protective boot or cast that may necessitate the use of crutches or a cane. While initially challenging, you can learn to use the walking aid to climb stairs if necessary.
A broken foot bone results from a traumatic fracture or a stress fracture, according to the American College of Foot and Ankle Surgeons’ website Foot Health Facts. While traumatic fractures usually result from a direct blow to the foot, stress fractures result from repetitive activity over time. Certain health conditions such as osteoporosis can predispose you to stress fractures. A broken bone in the foot can cause pain, swelling, bruising and difficulty placing weight on the foot, making it hard to walk or climb stairs. Proper diagnosis by a physician through X-rays or an MRI of the foot is required to determine the correct course of treatment.
Immobilization is the primary treatment for a broken bone in the foot

. Your foot may be placed in a cast or you may be given a removable brace or rigid shoe that protects the foot when walking. In some cases surgery may be necessary to set the bone in place with a pin or screw, so that it can heal properly. Consult with your doctor to determine if you can place any weight on the foot during the healing process. If you can place some weight on the foot, use a cane to help you navigate stairs. Hold the railing in one hand, climb a stair with your good foot, then follow it by leaning on the cane along with your injured foot.
A broken bone in the foot that results in a cast will require the use of crutches to walk, keeping all weight off of your injured foot. To climb stairs using crutches, place both crutches under one arm and hold the railing with the hand of your other arm. Pushing down on the crutches and the railing, hop up with the good leg and follow with the injured one, placing the weight on the crutches rather than the foot, according to the Lucile Packard Children¡¯s Hospital at Stanford. Take the stairs slowly and avoid climbing stairs in fast-moving crowds with crutches. In cases where there is no railing, keep a crutch under each arm as you normally would.
Remove throw rugs from any stairs or stairway landings as these items can slide, causing you to lose your footing, recommends the American Academy of Orthopaedic Surgeons. Ensure that stairways and railings are dry to prevent slipping or losing your grip on the railing as you climb the stairs. Wear flat shoes with nonslip soles that will not slide on the stairs. Avoid using an escalator with crutches, as your foot or crutch can easily become trapped in between or to the side of the moving stairs. When possible, opt to take an elevator with crutches
