Regenstein Library

The Joseph Regenstein Library is the main library of the University of Chicago, named after industrialist and philanthropist Joseph Regenstein. It is one of the largest repositories of books in the world and is noted for its brutalist architecture.

The library stands on the former grounds of Stagg Field. In 1965, the Joseph Regenstein Foundation gave $10 million to the University for construction of the library. In 1968, the university broke ground and, in 1970, the library opened at the final cost of $20,750,000. The building was designed by the Chicago firm Skidmore vintage football t shirts, Owings & Merrill led by senior architect Walter Netsch. It is built out of grooved limestone, which, from a distance, resembles concrete. University tour guides often remark on the resemblance between each of the elements of the building’s facade and the fore edge of a book. The University of Chicago Graduate Library School was housed in the Joseph Regenstein Library until its closure. Today, the “Reg” is the flagship institution of The University of Chicago Library system, which is considered among the top five in the world for breadth and depth of material, and receives high marks from users (The Princeton Review placed it in the top nine for college students).

The building has five floors above ground and two basements. Each floor has a large reading room in the center with desks, group study rooms, lockers and shelved reference works women business casual dresses. The reading room on floors two and three is connected by a small atrium. The reading rooms are separated from the stacks

, located on the west side of the building, so that the stacks can be maintained at lower temperatures, which are more amicable to book conservation. 220 faculty studies line the east side of the building.

The Regenstein’s overflowing collection posed space problems for the book stacks. In May 2005, the University of Chicago’s Board of Trustees authorized funding for a $42 million addition to the library, which was completed mid-2011. The Joe and Rika Mansueto Library, designed by Chicago-based architect Helmut Jahn, consists of a glass-domed reading room, under which lies an automated storage and retrieval system stretching fifty feet underground. It allows the library to maintain physical copies of materials available online while creating space within the book stacks to accommodate approximately 20 years of new print acquisitions.

The Regenstein Library is a popular social space for the University of Chicago college students: “On our campus, it’s not the football game that draws the biggest crowd, it’s evening study in the library,” said former Provost Richard Saller. “We’re a campus where the library is sort of the social center because it is the focus [of the university].”

The Regenstein Library is also the location of the Special Collections Research Center, which houses rare book collections, manuscripts, and university archives. The SCRC was established in 1953 by Herman H. Fussler and was moved to the “Reg” when it opened in 1970. The rare books collection currently holds approximately 265,000 volumes.

Woonsocket Union Railroad

The Woonsocket Union Railroad was a railroad in Rhode Island. It was incorporated in Rhode Island in 1850 to build a rail line from the Massachusetts state line near Woonsocket through the towns of Smithfield, Burrillville, and Glocester to the Connecticut state line.

In 1853, prior to even being completed, the Woonsocket Union Railroad merged with the New York and Boston Railroad.:394–395 The line was completed by October 3, 1855, when the Charles River Railroad also merged with the New York and Boston Railroad. The Charles River Railroad was chartered in Massachusetts to build a rail line from Brookline to the Rhode Island border in Bellingham, but had only been built as far as Needham at the time of the merger. In November 1861, the 13-mile section of track from Needham to Medway was finally opened, followed by a 1.3-mile segment from Medway to West Medway in 1862 and the final 9.9-mile segment outlined in the original charter to the Rhode Island state line in Bellingham in October 1863. In order to complete the connection to the rest of its network, the New York and Boston Railroad added a one-mile long stretch of track from Bellingham to the end of its network at the terminus of the former Woonsocket Union Railroad in Woonsocket.:394
Despite its grand plans and long route, profitability was a challenge for the New York and Boston Railroad, which faced competition from the nearby Medway Branch Railroad and its connection to the larger Norfolk County Railroad. As a result, passenger traffic remained insufficient to keep the railroad in the black, and in 1864 it went bankrupt. The line was leased for 999 years to the Boston, Hartford and Erie Railroad on December 1, 1864, and outright consolidated with it on January 4, 1865.:394 Following the merger, the tracks of the former New York and Boston Railroad became the Woonsocket Division of the Boston, Hartford, and Erie Railroad. Later that year, on December 13, several associates of the much larger Erie Railroad were elected to the board of the Boston, Hartford, and Erie Railroad in an attempt to improve the railroad’s profitability, but despite being under partial control of the much larger and more successful railroad, finances continued to be a problem and maintenance and service struggled as a result. Reports of under-powered trains stalling due to a lack of steam abounded, and in 1873 the Boston, Hartford, and Erie Railroad declared bankruptcy. Afterwards, on April 17, 1873, the railroad was reorganized into the New York and New England Railroad by special act of the Legislature of Massachusetts.:396–397
On February 17, 1883, the New York and New England Railroad sold a 5.3-mile portion of the former Charles River Railroad to the Boston and Albany Railroad. The section reached from the New York and New England’s original connection to the Boston and Albany Railroad in Brookline to Cook Street in Newton (at what would later become Cook Junction) and became a part of the Boston and Albany Railroad’s Highland Branch.:396 To compensate for the loss of access to Boston, the railroad built a cutoff from Needham Junction east to the former Boston and Providence Railroad main line, which had since come under control of the Old Colony Railroad and, subsequently, the New York, New Haven and Hartford Railroad. The cutoff was exceptionally difficult to build, requiring several difficult rock cuts, and did not open until November 4, 1906. Originally Needham Junction was the only stop on the cutoff; Bird’s Hill opened as an infill station in 1917.
The New York and New England Railroad faced many of the same problems as its predecessors, principally continued operation on lines that were otherwise not profitable. Much of the railroad was supported by money earned from the Norwich and Worcester Railroad line, which had been leased by the Boston, Hartford jordans schuhe, and Erie Railroad. The railroad’s main competitor was the New York, New Haven and Hartford Railroad, as together the two railroad controlled virtually all rail traffic in New England south of the Boston and Albany Railroad. The final nail in the coffin of the New York and New England Railroad came in 1893, when the Old Colony Railroad was leased to the New York, New Haven and Hartford Railroad. On December 27, 1893, the New York and New England Railroad declared bankruptcy women business casual dresses, and was reorganized into the New England Railroad on August 26, 1895.:397 Three years later, on July 1, 1898, the New York, New Haven and Hartford Railroad signed a 99-year lease of the New England Railroad, and ten years after that, on April 1, 1908, the New England Railroad was conveyed to the New York, New Haven and Hartford Railroad.:400
By the 1960s, the New York, New Haven and Hartford Railroad, like many railroads Ted Baker Dresses outlet, was struggling to stay solvent in the face of increased competition from alternate modes of transportation, and so in 1961 it petitioned to be included in the newly-formed Penn Central Transportation Company. On December 31, 1968 all of its properties were purchased by Penn Central. Penn Central, however, soon went bankrupt, and on April 1, 1976 it was taken over by Conrail. On August 22, 1998, the Surface Transportation Board approved the buyout of Conrail by CSX and Norfolk Southern.
Today,[when?] much of the former Woonsocket Union Railroad line is abandoned, as is the case for many of the former New York and New England Railroad lines. A small section from a junction with the Providence and Worcester Railroad in Woonsocket to North Smithfield is the only stretch of track that remains.

. The movie is based on the book Dreamland: A Self-Help Manual for a Frightened Nation by Andri Snær Magnason. The film’s soundtrack is composed by Valgeir Sigurðsson.
The documentary Dreamland is about the question, in how far the unspoiled, unique nature of Iceland should be preserved or if it is more important to build up enormous dams to produce hydro-electronic energy. It shows, how the aspiration after “green energy” more and more threatens the natural wonders of Iceland just to provide aluminum industries with cheap energy. Through interviews with economists, psychologists, historians, poets, editors women business casual dresses, managers and so forth, the audience gets insight of different point of views. Furthermore, it deals with the fact that fear is a powerful emotion and a way of controlling people. For example, the fear of unemployment often leads to a limited view of other possible alternatives. To develop the countryside of Iceland and to preserve it from unemployment, the Icelandic government decided to make Iceland the biggest aluminum manufacturer. It seemed to be the simplest way.
The second theme the documentary deals with is how the world makes business with war. The military base in Keflavík increased the economy of this region, but when it got more and more irrelevant for the American government, the people feared for their jobs and the government tried desperately to convince the American military to stay.
During the whole documentary, pictures of a beautiful, untouched nature are shown, followed by gigantic hydro towers and dams which destroy the picture of the wilderness and beautiful landscape, which unites volcanoes, glaciers, mountains, waterfalls and so much more.
